Diseases of the retina can lead to partial or total loss of vision. For young   people, retinal disease can be caused by the presence of other diseases   such as diabetes. For older people, the most common retinal diseases are associated with conditions such as macular degeneration. 

Consult your doctor if :
 Frequent flashes of light.
 Floaters specially if there is a feeling of a shower of petals.
 Distortion of reading material.
 Sudden painless diminution of vision.
 Darkness is gradually enveloping the visual field


 The goal of focal or pan-retinal photocoagulation is to prevent the    development    of    new   vessels over the retina.
 Pan- retinal photocoagulation sacrifices peripheral vision in order to save the    much-  needed central vision.
 Night vision may be diminished.
 The treatment is to prevent further deterioration of vision, not to regain lost    vision.
 Recurrences of proliferative retinopathy may occur even after the treatment.
 Diabetes is a common condition affecting the retina and need regular eye    checkup.
